#MyMagisMessage: Shauna Glavin '22

Our #MyMagisMessage for the week comes from Shauna Glavin, a junior Exercise Science major from Rochester, NY!

At which service sites / community partners have you served or been a student liaison?

I have served with Youthability Play Practice and St. Martin de Porres High School Tutoring.

If you had to state your life mission off the top of your head, in one sentence, what would it be?

To form intentional and meaningful relationships with those around me in order to foster community and create more positive experiences.

At this point in my life, intentional relationships are more important than ever. Currently, being a student, an athlete, a friend, a sister, and filling many other roles, it's easy to get lost in the chaos. Forming meaningful relationships with the people around me helps keep me grounded, and keeps me motivated. Finding people in my life who motivate me to fill these roles, and fill them well, has positively impacted me. When I do get lost in the chaos of midterms, of my competitive athletic season, or anything else that may be going on, I lean on those around me. I lean on them for support, for love, and for motivation. Finding time to cultivate these relationships is a priority.

Service with others through John Carroll has impacted who I am and motivated my life's path. It has motivated me to act on things that I am passionate about. To spend time with those around me and to create relationships with new people. It has motivated me to take time out of my day to spend intentional time with others. Whether it is spending an hour singing with the members through YouthAbility, or talking with a high school student through Zoom, service has reminded me of the power of intentionality.
